Advice on adoption.

So as much as it pains me, my kitty that has been with me for the past 8 years just had surgery for cancer in her mouth and is down to 5 lbs I dread the day I lose her but I fear that day will be sooner rather then later. Growing up my pets have always been more then a pet, they are my companions and losing them is never easy. She is my first cat however as I've always been much more of a dog person myself. Currently me and my SO are moving back home to Washington and she is coming with us. We are considering adopting a dog, and while we're not adopting to have be intimate with our future family member I don't want to rule anything out. So my question is when we adopt do shelters automatically neuter any dogs that are given to them/caught? And would you recommend a puppy or one that has already grown

It is a nationwide mandate that any shelter, non profit or government run, spay and neuter all animals that leave the shelter. Even if the animal is leaving the shelter for a foster or rescue program then they will be neutered or spayed. There are very rare circumstances where an animal is released not altered it I don't know how they are done.....and without a good good argument it would only add suspicion if you try to convince them not to fix the animal. Now with that said... neutered animals can still play.. I have physical evidence in videos I've posted on this site of neutered dogs very happily trying to mount and make love. It depends on when they were fixed and if they had fun before getting fixed or not. If your getting a young dog from a shelter (like a puppy) they will fix them within being 3-5 weeks they will not go through their sexual maturity stage and probably will have little to no interest. Their sheaths won't even be fully developed since they were altered before that process went through development. There is a bunch more to talk about in this topic if you have more questions ask away.
