I believe we are sitting close to 1tb currently. It took about 2 years and its around 500GB in growth yearly.

...depends, a forum doesn't need fast storage - not fast fast storage like you'd need for a busy database anyway. I think 4x4tb sata-ssds in raid 10 would be enough for a few years if we're talking about a simple hardware server - if it's storage space on a cluster on the other hand it could easily get expensive as those usually need better hardware to be fast, have overhead in the form of additional server costs and use quite a bit of redundancy to be reliable. Also depending on the provider they might have high license costs, even if they're a ceph cluster at the core.

HDDs do not get enough love. As long as you get an SSD for your OS and Antivirus then you are good to go. @ZTHorse I take you guys are using a pair of Intel Xeons to handle all of the traffic?
